Automated External Defibrillator
Wicklow Tennis Club is very proud to announce the recent installation at our club of an Automated External Defibrillator, more commonly referred to as a Defibrillator. The device is positioned to allow all trained members quick and easy access to this life saving Defibrillator that in turn can potentially save the life of a person “young or old” who falls victim to Sudden Cardiac Arrest. In Ireland approximately 5000 people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest every year and by placing a Defibrillator in the Tennis Club we hope to significantly increase the chances of survival from Sudden Cardiac Arrest should such an event occur in the Tennis Club. The chance of survival from Sudden Cardiac Arrest reduces by 7 – 10% every minute that goes by without Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) being carried out and a Defibrillator being used on the patient. The only effective treatment for Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the use of Defibrillation.
Advanced Paramedic Ken O’Dwyer, a club member with 13 years experience in the Dublin Fire Brigade and Ambulance service has advised the club on the setting up of the Defibrillator programme. There are currently six trained members who volunteered to take the internationally recognised Heartsaver AED training course with a further six who will be completing the final part of their training in the next two weeks. The Heartsaver AED course is a four hour training course dealing with calling the emergency services on 999/112, CPR, use of the Defibrillator and Choking. According to Ken O’Dwyer the volunteers successfully completed the course to a high standard and are ready if the need arises to deal with a person suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest, be they a one year old child or an elderly person. Dr. Colm Power of Westmount Clinic is the programme Medical advisor and has overseen the training. Congratulations to the following members who recently completed the Heartsaver AED course: Kerry Callery, Michelle Hender-Phillips, Niall O’Connor, Mark Sexton, Dr. Colm Power and John Sinnott ( Club President). The Committee of Wicklow Tennis Club would like to extend a ‘big thank you’ to Ken for his time, expertise and commitment throughout the training sessions.
Cardio Tennis
Cardio Tennis has arrived at Wicklow Tennis Club. Deirdre Curtis, one of our club coaches introduced sixteen members, eight per class, at WTC to this fun event on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th September last. If you can swing a racquet you can play cardio tennis. It involves a 60 minute session designed to get your heart pumping and burn calories. It includes a warm up, cardio workout and cool down, while listening to pumping music. There is no coaching involved - just fun. The two groups who participated thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Due to a high level of interest, the first block of seven weeks has been booked out so if you missed out this time you will get a chance at a later date.
